How To Maintain A Black Car

Black cars look incredible when clean, but they show every swirl. Here is how to keep them looking sharp.

Black cars look incredible when freshly detailed, but they are one of the hardest colours to maintain. They show dust, water spots, swirl marks and poor washing technique more than almost anything else.

The key is reducing contact with dirt. A proper pre-wash is essential because it removes as much grime as possible before you touch the paint. The less dirt on the surface, the lower the risk of scratching during the contact wash.

Use a clean wash mitt, quality shampoo and safe drying towel. Avoid sponges, brushes and old bath towels. Most swirl marks on black paint come from washing and drying, not from driving.

Protection helps massively. Wax or ceramic coating makes the surface slicker and easier to clean, which reduces the amount of force needed during washing. Ceramic coating is especially useful on black daily drivers because it helps dirt release more easily.

If the paint already looks grey, hazy or covered in swirls, maintenance alone will not fix it. A Stage 1 or Stage 2 machine polish is usually needed to restore depth and clarity.

At Elite Auto Detailing, black cars are often recommended a polish and ceramic protection package because the improvement in gloss and ease of care is very noticeable.
