How To Remove Swirl Marks

Swirl marks are caused by poor washing and can usually be reduced or removed with machine polishing.

Swirl marks are fine scratches in the clear coat that usually show up under sunlight or strong lighting. They often look like circular spider web marks across the paint.

They are normally caused by poor washing and drying methods. Dirty sponges, brushes, old towels and wiping dusty paint can all drag contamination across the surface and create swirls.

The proper way to remove or reduce swirl marks is machine polishing. This refines the clear coat so light reflects more cleanly from the paint. Products that fill swirls can hide them temporarily, but polishing is what actually improves the surface.

A Stage 1 polish can reduce lighter swirls and bring back gloss. Heavier swirls may require Stage 2 correction, especially on darker colours where defects are more obvious.

After polishing, protection is important. Wax or ceramic coating helps make the paint easier to clean, reducing the chance of creating new wash marks.

At Elite Auto Detailing, swirl removal is assessed based on paint condition, safety and customer expectation. The aim is a strong improvement without chasing defects that would remove too much clear coat.
