Wax vs Ceramic Coating

Wax and ceramic both protect paint, but they perform very differently. Here is what you need to know.

Wax and ceramic coating both protect paintwork, but they are very different in durability, behaviour and cost. Wax is the traditional option. Ceramic coating is the longer-lasting modern protection route.

A good wax gives a warm glossy finish and adds a slick layer to the paint. It is ideal for customers who want a quick improvement, a fresh look and short-term protection without committing to a bigger package.

Ceramic coating lasts much longer. It bonds more strongly to the paint and creates stronger water beading, better chemical resistance and easier maintenance washing. This makes it a better option for daily drivers that see regular rain, road grime and winter conditions.

The downside is preparation. Ceramic coating needs a cleaner, better-prepared surface. Ideally the car should be decontaminated and machine polished before application. Wax is more forgiving and can be used as a simpler finishing option.

If you just want the car fresh for a short period, wax is fine. If you want longer protection and easier cleaning, ceramic is usually the smarter investment.

Through Build Your Detail, customers can choose no protection, wax, 1 year ceramic, 3 year ceramic or 5 year ceramic depending on the finish and durability they want.
